“Lanny Larcinese knows crime fiction. His novel, GET BEK, further proves his growing stature in the field. The framework of the novel somewhat parallels the true crime case of Ira Einhorn, who murdered his ex-girlfriend, Holly Maddux, in 1977. Like Einhorn, Larcinese’s villain, Max Bek, skirts the law by going on the lam to evade a trial and likely incarceration. Like Einhorn, Max lives for decades in Europe before the authorities can “Get Bek.” Of course, Larcinese’s book is fiction, but his characters are well-drawn and are thoroughly believable. Even though I was familiar with the Einhorn case, I nonetheless found the novel fascinating, fast-moving, and thought-provoking. Larcinese incorporated shifting POVs with finesse. I always viewed Einhorn as a Rasputin-like character–narcissistic, egotistical, highly intelligent, a womanizer, and praised as a visionary by elite society. Max Bek shares all those characteristics. Larcinese’s research is evident throughout the novel–I’m envious of how well he juxtaposed the true crime case with his fictional interpretation. In many ways, GET BEK could be considered historical fiction. But I think the novel leans more toward a police procedural and thus resides in the realm of crime fiction. Highly recommended!”
